Tools and Materials for Deep Cleaning Carpets
To get the best results you want to deep clean your carpet every 6 months. After you decide to deep clean your carpets make sure you have the following to avoid last minute scrambling around:
Vacuum cleaner with attachments
Shop vacuum
Sponges
A DIY steam cleaning machine
Carpet cleaning soap
Paper towels
Indoor and outdoor floor mats
Spot treating cleaners
Vacuum filters
Prepare
After you set a cleaning schedule and are ready for action, move away all objects that could block the way of the vacuum cleaner. Dust the furniture, blinds and shelves first so the falling dust can be vacuumed.
The Right Solution
Depending on the stain and carpet type, make sure you read the label choose the right carpet cleaning solution that can clean both fresh and dry stains. If you need to clean your carpet with a rag, use a white cloth as dyed or patterned rag colours can transfer to the carpet. Paper towels work as a great alternative for cleaning fresh stains. Avoid using brushes because they could damage your carpet fibres.
Hard to Reach Areas
Instead of moving heavy furniture use vacuum cleaner attachments like a crevice tool, dusting brush and extension wand. Edges of carpets and baseboards are collecting the most dust so that is where you should start. Use a nozzle attachment. For stairs, use a stair hose attachment or just the hose itself. The smaller the attachment the easier it will be to reach hard corners.
Avoid Scrubbing and Soaking the Carpet
Before you use the carpet cleaning solution of your choice test it out by applying it over a small area of the carpet. Gently dab the affected area with a white cloth – scrubbing will just make the stain harder to get out. Do not soak the carpet into the water because the pad beneath can absorb the water which potentially will cause mold and fungus.
Household Solutions to Deal with Spills
Pre-treat any spills as quickly as possible to avoid the stain setting in. For wet spills do the following:
Sugar based (eg: juice): blot (put pressure on the cloth then lift and repeat) the stain with a white cloth, spray the area with warm water, and blot the area again. Place a clean towel over the area when done then put something heavy on the cloth for a few hours to soak up the remaining water or juice.
Dairy spills: Mix a cup of warm water with half a tablespoon of dish detergent and use a clean white cloth to blot the stain until it has disappeared
Wine spills: Same as a dairy spill but you can sub out the tablespoon of dish detergent for vinegar on tougher accidents. You can also blot up the excess, pour cold water on the stain to dilute it without setting it, then blot again. If the stain remains, add baking soda mixed with water at a 3:1 ratio. Once dry, vacuum it up and you should be good to go.
